From the speaker

  • AI agents (AI systems that act in the world on users' behalf)
  • will be a major focus of attention in the field
  • in 2025

Our interpretation

  • Plain reading: during 2025, AI agents were among the main themes of major AI company launches, research output and industry analysis.

Counts as supported if: In 2025, leading AI labs launched flagship agent products, and independent trackers report a large rise in attention to agents.

Counts as contradicted if: Agents were a marginal theme in 2025, with few major launches and no notable rise in research or industry attention.

Retrospective: these criteria were written after the outcome was public.

Rationale

The forecast was that AI agents would be a major focus of attention in the AI field in 2025, and that year has ended. On January 23, 2025, OpenAI launched Operator, a web agent it described as one of its first agents (e1). On July 17, 2025, OpenAI added agent capabilities to ChatGPT (e2). The MIT AI Agent Index, published in February 2026, says 2025 marked a substantial rise in attention to AI agents (e3). It reports that Google Scholar papers mentioning 'AI agent' or 'agentic AI' exceeded the total from all prior years combined. It also reports that 24 of the 30 agents it tracks were released or received major agentic updates in 2024–2025 (e3). On a plain reading, these items meet the support condition. No counterevidence was found.

Limitations

  • 'Major focus' has no numeric threshold. The evidence shows agents were prominent but does not rank them against other themes in the field.
  • Both launch items come from one company, OpenAI.
  • Gartner's 2025 Hype Cycle press release could not be read and was not used.

Evidence (3 items)

  • Supports the claim: OpenAI,

Operator is one of our first agents, which are AIs capable of doing work for you independently—you give it a task and it will execute it.

Why it matters here: A leading lab launched a general-purpose web agent early in 2025.

  • Supports the claim: OpenAI,

ChatGPT can now do work for you using its own computer, handling complex tasks from start to finish.

Why it matters here: Mid-2025, OpenAI built agent capabilities into its flagship consumer product.

  • Supports the claim: MIT AI Agent Index (Staufer et al.),

24/30 agents were released or received major agentic updates in 2024-2025. Papers in Google Scholar mentioning “AI agent” or “agentic AI” exceeded the total from all prior years combined.

Why it matters here: An independent academic tracker finds that in 2025 more agent papers appeared than in all prior years combined, and it describes a substantial rise in attention.
