From the speaker
- the genie can no longer be stuffed back in the bottle
- MetaAI initially open-sourced the model, and published a paper
- anyone skilled in the art can now replicate their recipe
- chatGPT, just released by OpenAI
Our interpretation
- I read this as a claim about the situation when he wrote it (mid-November to 10 December 2022). Taking down Galactica's demo did not take the technology out of circulation: the model and paper stayed available, and ChatGPT was publicly accessible.
- Target period runs from Galactica's release (2022-11-15) to the post date (2022-12-10).
Counts as supported if: Evidence that after the demo came down, Galactica's model or paper stayed available for others to use or replicate, and/or that similar systems stayed publicly accessible.
Counts as contradicted if: Evidence that Meta withdrew the Galactica weights and paper completely and that no comparable model was publicly available in that period.
Retrospective: these criteria were written after the outcome was public.
Current assessment
Was it true for the period described?
Outcome: Supported
The dated evidence matches what the claim committed to, under the criteria frozen before grading.
Scored on a plain reading. The speaker named no measure for this claim, so it was judged on the reading an informed reader would take, stated below under our interpretation. Both reviews had to find that reading fair.

Rationale
Marcus said withdrawing Galactica could not contain the technology because the model had been open-sourced and the method published, and because ChatGPT was out. On 17 November 2022 Meta said it had paused only the demo and that its models stayed available so researchers could reproduce the paper's results. In early December ChatGPT was publicly available and widely used. During the period he described, taking down the demo did not remove access to the technology.
Limitations
- Shows availability during the period, not long-term containment.
- Weight availability rests on Meta's statement as reported, not a dated repository record.
Evidence (2 items)
Supports the claim: MIT Technology Review,
have paused the demo for now. Our models are available for researchers who want to learn more about the work and reproduce results in the paper.
Why it matters here: Meta pulled only the demo. It said the models stayed available so others could reproduce the results, which fits his point that withdrawal did not contain the technology.

Supports the claim: The Verge,
A web demo for the bot was released last week and has since been enthusiastically embraced by users around the web.
Why it matters here: A comparable system was openly available and widely used within the period, so similar capability was not confined to Meta's withdrawn demo.
