Our interpretation
- The plain reading is that OpenAI’s earlier clear technical advantage over rival model providers had eroded by the interview.
- I assess model leadership across major independent evaluations. The separate business-market claim receives its own assessment.
- I read 'squandered' as losing an advantage, not as a separately established causal claim about management decisions.
- The comparison spans 2023 through the post date, using the surrounding reference to a few years ago.
- Because no benchmark or weighting is specified, evidence of convergence and evidence of retained leadership must both be reported.
Counts as supported if: Historical evaluations establish an earlier OpenAI lead, followed by rivals matching or overtaking it across major model evaluations before the post.
Counts as contradicted if: Contemporaneous major evaluations show that OpenAI still held or had regained a measurable lead. A combination of convergence on some measures and leadership on others warrants a qualified mixed finding.
Retrospective: these criteria were written after the outcome was public.
Current assessment
Was it true for the period described?
Outcome: Mixed
Part of the claim holds and part does not, and the record says which part is which.
Scored on a plain reading. The speaker named no measure for this claim, so it was judged on the reading an informed reader would take, stated below under our interpretation. Both reviews had to find that reading fair.

Rationale
OpenAI’s earlier leaderboard lead and the later convergence of rival models are supported. But technical leadership had not disappeared across the board: Artificial Analysis placed GPT-5.5 first in April 2026. The evidence supports loss of a clear, uncontested advantage while qualifying the suggestion that OpenAI no longer led. It does not establish blame implied by 'squandered.'
Limitations
- Different evaluations measure different capabilities and preferences.
- The result depends on how an unspecified lead is defined.
- The cited snapshots do not provide a complete daily record through June 10.
Evidence (3 items)
Supports the claim: LMSYS,
GPT-4 is leading the board
Why it matters here: GPT-4 ranked first in the reported April 24–May 8 voting window. This supports the earlier-lead component, without proving superiority on every task.

Supports the claim: Stanford HAI,
no single model dominates
Why it matters here: The report describes closely grouped early-2026 Arena scores, with Anthropic and Google among the leaders. This supports erosion of an unambiguous OpenAI advantage.

Goes against the claim: Artificial Analysis,
the new leading model
Why it matters here: The evaluator reports GPT-5.5 leading its Intelligence Index by three points and leading several individual evaluations. This contradicts an unqualified reading that OpenAI had ceased to hold a technical lead.

What would settle it
A specified meaning of leadership and a representative set of contemporaneous evaluations would permit a less interpretation-dependent assessment.
