Our interpretation

  • 'The problem' is generative-AI pollution of the information ecosystem: AI-made false or junk content reaching the public.
  • Plain reading: measurable signs of this pollution rose fast in the months before the post.
  • Period chosen: May 2023 (when trackers began counting) to the post date. This is the most recent stretch public evidence could cover before the post.

Counts as supported if: Trackers or documented incidents show AI-generated misinformation sources or incidents growing quickly between mid-2023 and early April 2024.

Counts as contradicted if: Trackers show flat or falling counts of AI misinformation sources or incidents over that period.

Retrospective: these criteria were written after the outcome was public.

Current assessment

Was it true for the period described?

Outcome: Supported

The dated evidence matches what the claim committed to, under the criteria frozen before grading.

Scored on a plain reading. The speaker named no measure for this claim, so it was judged on the reading an informed reader would take, stated below under our interpretation. Both reviews had to find that reading fair.

Rationale

NewsGuard's tracker of unreliable AI-generated news sites rose from just under 50 in May 2023 to about 600 in December 2023, then to 713 by February 22, 2024. That is more than a tenfold rise in under a year. On April 4, 2024, two days before the post, X promoted a false headline written by its Grok chatbot to its whole user base. Mashable called that a first for the platform. Together these show the problem was growing quickly when he wrote.

Limitations

  • Tracker counts come from one commercial source and may partly reflect more searching rather than only more sites.
  • Counts of sites are not the same as reach or harm.

Evidence (3 items)

  • Supports the claim: The Guardian (Nigeria), reporting NewsGuard data,

a rise in AI-generated sites making false or unverified claims from just under 50 in May to around 600 in December 2023, a more than tenfold increase across just over half a year.

Why it matters here: A more than tenfold rise in AI content-farm sites in about seven months is fast growth in AI information pollution.

  • Supports the claim: The Guardian (Nigeria), reporting NewsGuard data,

The number of websites using AI-generated content to spread fake news has increased to 713 as of February 22

Why it matters here: The count was still climbing in February 2024, about six weeks before the post.

  • Supports the claim: Mashable,

the first time X took Grok's misinformation, packaged it as a real trending news story, and promoted it to its entire user base

Why it matters here: A new, platform-wide channel for AI-made false news appeared two days before the post, a further sign that the problem was escalating.
