From the speaker
- The product was not yet released to the general public
- it's not been vetted by the scientific community
- with the arguable exception of Chollet and his partner on a single task
Our interpretation
- Plain reading: on 20–21 December 2024, o3 was not available to the public, and outside researchers had not broadly evaluated it. The ARC Prize test is an exception he states himself, so it does not count against him.
- Applications for early safety-testing access do not count as public release or scientific vetting.
Counts as supported if: Records show o3 was not publicly available on 20–21 December 2024, was released later, and its benchmark results at that time were mainly OpenAI's own.
Counts as contradicted if: o3 was publicly available by 21 December 2024, or independent researchers beyond ARC Prize had broadly evaluated it by then.
Retrospective: these criteria were written after the outcome was public.

Rationale
On the day of the demo, TechCrunch reported that o3 was not widely available. Only safety researchers could sign up, for an o3-mini preview, with an o3 preview to follow later. OpenAI released o3 on 16 April 2025. The benchmark claims at the reveal came from OpenAI's internal evaluations. ARC Prize did test o3, but he named that exception himself. So both parts hold.
Limitations
- 'Vetted by the scientific community' has no precise test. ARC Prize's evaluation is a partial independent check, which he acknowledged.
Evidence (3 items)
Supports the claim: TechCrunch,
Neither o3 nor o3-mini are widely available yet, but safety researchers can sign up for a preview for o3-mini starting today.
Why it matters here: o3 was not available to the public at the time of the demo.

Supports the claim: TechCrunch,
These claims have to be taken with a grain of salt, of course. They’re from OpenAI’s internal evaluations.
Why it matters here: The benchmark results announced at the time were OpenAI's own internal evaluations, not outside scientific checks.

Supports the claim: OpenAI,
Today, we’re releasing OpenAI o3 and o4-mini, the latest in our o-series of models trained to think for longer before responding.
Why it matters here: o3 was released only in April 2025, confirming it was unreleased in December 2024.
