Pundit ClaimsAI claims by Gary Marcus and Ed Zitron, with the evidence

“Every single year, every single part of the AI bubble becomes more expensive — AI labs want to spend more money, AI data centers cost more money, AI services become more expensive, AI debt becomes more expensive, and everybody becomes decidedly less-patient for there to be some sort of outcome.”

The AI Hater's Manifesto, paragraph 178. The full statement is at the source.

Our reading, the sentence that was checked:

Every part of the AI industry becomes more expensive every year while patience for results declines.

From the speaker

  • Every single year
  • every single part of the AI bubble becomes more expensive
  • AI labs want to spend more money
  • AI data centers cost more money
  • AI services become more expensive
  • AI debt becomes more expensive
  • everybody becomes decidedly less-patient

Our interpretation

  • The claim describes an ongoing trend with no named period. I read it as the year before the post (Aug 2025 to Aug 2026), which matches his nearby line 'in the last year'.
  • Plain reading: in that year, each of the five things rose. Lab spending, data center build cost, the effective price of AI services, borrowing costs for AI debt, and impatience among investors and customers for results.
  • The context concedes that token prices fell or stayed flat. So 'AI services become more expensive' most fairly means total spend or effective cost per task, not list price per token.

Counts as supported if: Dated evidence from the period showing that all five parts rose: lab spending, data center build costs, the effective cost of AI services, borrowing costs for AI-linked debt, and measurable impatience (for example surveys or investor pressure).

Counts as contradicted if: Dated evidence from the period showing that one or more of the named parts clearly did not rise. Examples: flat or falling effective service costs, cheaper or easier AI borrowing, or steady or rising patience among investors and customers.

Retrospective: these criteria were written after the outcome was public.

Scored on a plain reading. The speaker named no measure for this claim, so it was judged on the reading an informed reader would take, stated below under our interpretation. Both reviews had to find that reading fair.

Rationale

The claim says five things all rose: lab spending, data center costs, AI service costs, AI debt costs, and impatience. The contract reads the period as Aug 2025 to Aug 2026. On debt, one report said Nvidia's 5-year credit default swap spread was 57.25 basis points in July 2026, up from about 42 in late June (e1). That is one issuer over about one month. An August 2026 report said Nvidia had reportedly told customers that many server configurations would cost more than 15% more, starting with systems shipped early the next year. Reuters could not immediately verify the details (e3). That is a future price, not a cost rise within the period. The July report also said a planned Nvidia bond offering around June 15, 2026 drew reported demand of about $85 billion, roughly four times its size (e2). That shows demand for the debt, not its cost. A price index found no list-price change for the 17 models and plans that appeared in both its September and October 2026 editions (e4). That is after the period and covers list prices, not total spend. No item gives year-over-year figures for lab spending, data center cost per GW or effective service cost, and none measures patience.

Limitations

  • The packet has no year-over-year figures for Aug 2025 to Aug 2026 on lab spending, data center cost per GW, or effective AI service cost.
  • No item in the packet measures investor or customer patience.
  • The debt evidence comes from one news report and covers one issuer (Nvidia) over about one month.
  • The reported server price rise applies to future shipments, and Reuters said its details could not immediately be verified.
  • The price index compares September and October 2026 list prices. That is after the period, and it does not measure total spend. The author concedes that token prices fell or stayed flat.

Evidence (4 items)

  • Supports the claim: Crypto Briefing,

Nvidia’s 5-year credit default swap spreads widened to 57.25 basis points, up from roughly 42 basis points in late June.

Why it matters here: Shows the cost of insuring AI-linked debt rose over one month. That fits 'AI debt becomes more expensive', but it covers one issuer over a short window, not a full year.

  • Supports the claim: 24/7 Wall St. via Yahoo Finance,

servers containing its Grace Blackwell and next-generation Vera Rubin chips will cost more than 15% more in many configurations beginning with systems shipped early next year.

Why it matters here: Points to higher data center hardware costs. But the increase applies to systems shipped in 2027, so it does not show a realized cost rise in the target year.

  • Goes against the claim: Crypto Briefing,

Demand for the offering reportedly reached $85 billion, roughly a 4x oversubscription.

Why it matters here: Strong demand for AI-linked debt cuts against the post's surrounding picture of weakening appetite. It does not show whether borrowing costs rose.

  • Goes against the claim: Kingy AI,

None of the 17 models and plans in both editions changed its list price.

Why it matters here: List prices for AI services held flat from September to October 2026. This is after the target period and measures list price, not total spend, so it is context only.

What would settle it

Year-over-year figures for Aug 2025 to Aug 2026 on each part: lab compute spending (filings or disclosures), cost per GW of data center build, effective spend per AI user or task, yields or spreads across AI-linked debt, and a survey or market measure of investor or customer patience.
